There are volunteers all over the country working on this endeavor in an apolitical and nonpartisan way. Some spend enormous amounts of time on the project not just because they are driven to, but because they have the time and resources. Others can spend only a limited amount of time as they have families to support. Here are some of the key independent volunteers around the country. You can come directly to OpHelmet's headquarters for support and advice, but you can also contact any of the folks on the list. Notes to Affiliates/Chapters: When funds are
collected in the name of Operation Helmet, they must be used as per our
original charter.
Since its inception, Operation Helmet has been dedicated to retrofitting
'Plain Jane' helmets (PASGT and
LWH) with shock-absorbing pads.
As of 21 Aug 2006, we still have over 3000 Marines in front-line combat with
such helmets that have requested our help. Good bullet
deflection/stopping but no/limited blast protection. There are also
approximately 800-900 Air Force Special Ops, Security and First Responder
(fire-fighters for off-base IED's) in need.
While the Army is being issued a pad for the Advanced Combat Helmet that
doesn't feel as comfortable as the pads we purchase and send, it does
provide blast protection.
As always, helmet upgrades will be sent as a matter of first priority to
combat troops having NO or limited blast protection. When all are so
provided, we may then begin to work on the matter of providing pad exchanges
for the Army ACH and troops using the MICH helmets if their pad sets are not
considered suitable for long-term wear because of comfort.
As a rule, not more than 1% of any donation can be used for administration costs and must be cleared by the Operation Helmet board. The goal is every penny to the troops - let's keep as close to the goal as possible.
The Operation Helmet Board intends to continue use funds collected (past,
present, and future) to provide helmet upgrade kits for troops.
Another important note: do not have checks written to your name. The IRS counts that as income that you have to report and pay taxes on at the end of the year. |
